In 1863, three Civil War soldiers who were members of St. Augustine Parish in Leopold were sent to the notorious prisoner of war camp at Andersonville, Ga. The soldiers prayed to the Blessed Virgin Mary under a particular title and vowed to have a statue in her honor made in their native Belgium if they survived the prison camp. All three soldiers survived, and one traveled to Belgium to have the statue made. It was brought back to St. Augustine Parish in 1867.
