The Mass was held as part of the 48th annual national convention of a Catholic fraternal order. Cardinal Laurean Rugambwa of Tanzania was the principal celebrant of the Mass, and the homily was given by then-Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of New York at the time.
