Holy Cross Father Emmanuel Kallarackal was chaplain at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis during 2021-2022 academic year

Holy Cross Father Emmanuel Kallarackal, a member of the Congregation of Holy Cross, died unexpectedly on Aug. 29 while traveling in Waterford, Ireland. He was 69.

Father Kallarackal was a chaplain at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis from 2021-22. A memorial Mass was celebrated for him on Sept. 3 at the Joe O’Malia Performing Arts Center on Cathedral’s campus.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Sept. 7 in Agartala, India. Burial followed at Holy Cross Cemetery in Agartala.

Father Kallarackal was born on Nov. 29, 1956, in the southern India state of Kerala. He entered the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1972 in India, professed first vows on May 27, 1978, and perpetual vows on July 29, 1983. He was ordained a priest on May 8, 1984.

Father Kallarackal earned graduate degrees, including a doctorate in religious education, at Fordham University in New York.

A member of the North East India Province of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Father Kallarackal dedicated much of his ministry to education in the city of Agartala in northeastern India. He founded Holy Cross College there in 2009 and served as its first principal.

In addition to serving as chaplain at Cathedral High School, Father Kallarackal also provided sacramental assistance at St. Joan of Arc Parish in Indianapolis.

In 2022, Father Kallarackal was elected to serve on his religious community’s general council and as its vicar general and first assistant, thus ending his ministry at Cathedral High School and leading him to serve in Rome.

In serving in his religious community’s leadership, Father Kallarackal oversaw preparation for a new Holy Cross missionary ministry in Bougainville in Papua New Guinea.
