My Journey to God

Prayer Partner

Is it any less hallowed
Dear Mary, my Mother,
If we’re joined by a bold
And irreverent Other?

She sees that we’re quietly
Trying to talk
But still saunters in
With a swaggering walk

And looks at me with
Expectant stare
As if I should surrender
The only chair

But when I refuse, she
Approaches with ease
And crowds in beside me
With deft little squeeze

And settles down there
With a satisfied sigh
And joins in the prayer
As the Mysteries go by

I find that her presence
Enhances my peace
Despite her so rudely
Gaining her lease
Her rhythmic breath and
Occasional nudge
Make me far less inclined
To harbor a grudge

O sweet Mother Mary
Is it any less fit
If a kitty cat wants
To join where we sit?
