Franciscan Sister Linda Bates served the archdiocese in schools, parishes and Marian University in Indianapolis

Franciscan Sister Linda Anne Bates (formerly Sister Claudia) died on Aug. 22 at the motherhouse of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis in Oldenburg. She was 86.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Aug. 27 at the Motherhouse Chapel in Oldenburg. Burial followed at the sisters’ cemetery.

Sister Linda was born on Oct. 2, 1939, in Rushville and was baptized at St. Mary Parish there. Her family later moved to Indianapolis, where they were members of Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ Parish. Sister Linda entered the Sisters of St. Francis on Feb. 2, 1957, and professed final vows on Aug. 12, 1962.

Sister Linda earned a bachelor’s degree in English at Marian University in Indianapolis, a master’s degree in education at Xavier University in Cincinnati and a master’s degree in pastoral ministry at Seattle University in Seattle. She spent many years working as a teacher and counselor in Cincinnati and Indianapolis.

She recently celebrated 70 years of religious life at Oldenburg; those who enter early in a calendar year are counted with those who entered the previous year.

During her 70 years as a member of the Sisters of St. Francis, Sister Linda served for 19 years in Catholic schools in Indiana and Ohio. She later ministered for 26 years in parish ministry in Indiana, Iowa, Michigan and for 10 years in campus ministry.

In the archdiocese, she served in Catholic schools in Indianapolis at St. Lawrence School in 1963 and from 1964-65, at the former St. Mary School in 1964, at the former

St. Gabriel the Archangel School from 1968-69, St. Christopher School from 1969-77 and the former St. Rita School from 1978-82. Sister Linda later led campus ministry efforts at Marian University from 1995-2004 and taught theology there in 2005. In parish ministry in the archdiocese, she served as parish life coordinator at St. Nicholas Parish in Ripley County from 2011-13 and at St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Milan from 2013-15.

She is survived by two brothers, Steve and Mike Bates.
