Benedictine Brother Kenan Kapina served in the business office and guest house at Saint Meinrad

Benedictine Brother Kenan Kapina, a monk of Saint Meinrad Archabbey in St. Meinrad, died on July 19 at the monastery’s infirmary. He was 73.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on July 23. Burial followed at the Archabbey Cemetery.

Brother Kenan was a jubilarian of monastic profession, in the 50th year of his profession of vows at the time of his death.

Brother Kenan was born on Oct. 5, 1952, in East Chicago, Ind., and was given the name Vincent Joel at his baptism.

He was an elementary student at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Chicago and later graduated from Bishop Noll High School in 1970. Brother Kenan was then a college seminarian at the former Saint Meinrad College in St. Meinrad, graduating in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree in English.

He went on to study at Purdue University for a year before returning to Saint Meinrad to be a novice in the monastic community.

Brother Kenan made his first profession of vows on Aug. 15, 1976, and his solemn profession of vows on Aug. 15, 1979.

He began 19 years of service in Saint Meinrad’s business office in 1979. In 1997, he was appointed manager of the Saint Meinrad Guest House and Retreat Center and associate oblate director, positions he held until 2004. He also served for a period as the monastery’s vocations director.

In 2004, Brother Kenan served in the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee in Florida in its Office of Marriage and Family Life and later in its Business and Development Office before returning to Saint Meinrad in 2019.

Carmelite Sister Jean Alice McGoff led the former Monastery of the Resurrection in Indianapolis as prioress for 27 years

Discalced Carmelite Sister Jean Alice McGoff died on July 15 at the motherhouse of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis in Oldenburg. She was 97.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Aug. 5 at the Motherhouse Chapel in Oldenburg. Burial followed in a separate plot for the Carmelite sisters in the cemetery of the Oldenburg Franciscans.

Sister Jean Alice was born on Sept. 19, 1928, in Cincinnati.

She joined the former Discalced Carmelite Monastery of the Resurrection in Indianapolis, receiving her habit and the religious name Agnes of the Virgin Mother in January 1950 and professing final vows in January 1954.

Sister Jean Alice later served as the contemplative community’s novice mistress, as its sub-prioress for six years and as its prioress for 27 years.

She also helped found the Association of Contemplative Sisters and the Carmelite Communities Associated.

In 2008, Sister Jean Alice was prioress of the Monastery of the Resurrection when the community sold their home to the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.

Sister Jean Alice and the remaining members of the Carmelite monastery then moved to the Franciscan motherhouse in Oldenburg.

The monastery subsequently became Bishop Simon Bruté College Seminary. The seminary community continues to honor the Carmelite heritage of the building, grounds and the women religious who lived and prayed there.

Franciscan Sister Norma Jean Hynes served in Catholic education for 25 years, including in Indianapolis

Franciscan Sister Norma Jean Hynes (formerly Sister Dolorose) died on July 25 at the motherhouse of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis in Oldenburg. She was 93.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on July 31 at the Motherhouse Chapel in Oldenburg. Burial followed at the sisters’ cemetery.

Sister Norma Jean was born on Dec. 22, 1932, in Indianapolis where she grew up as a member of the former St. Francis de Sales Parish and graduated from the former St. Mary Academy.

She joined the Sisters of St. Francis on Feb. 2, 1954, and professed final vows in on Aug. 12, 1959. Sister Norma Jean earned a bachelor’s degree in education in 1962 at Marian University in Indianapolis.

For 25 of her 72 years as a member of the Sisters of St. Francis, Sister Norma Jean ministered as an educator in Catholic schools in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. She later served with the nursing staff at the motherhouse for 13 years.

In the archdiocese, Sister Norma Jean served the former Sacred Heart School in Clinton from 1959-63, at Holy Name of Jesus School in Beech Grove from 1963-74 and St. Mark the Evangelist School in Indianapolis from 1974-75. She ministered with the nursing staff at the motherhouse from 1980-85 and 1987-95.

Sister Norma Jean is survived by two sisters, Cathy Jeffries of Danville and Teresa Lenahan of Coatesville, Ind.
