Reader: World Cup offered a reminder that love of others is what we’re about

The recent World Cup has shown that, as a people, we all have more in common than not.

We all want the same things and have the same hopes. We all have the same hurts, and we all tend to be kind and charitable when we see others hurting, too.

Today’s social media and news outlets are not in step with this, fueling discord in an attempt to get ratings. Reality is not about ratings, it’s about lives.

Aristotle said everyone should pull together so that everyone can get ahead and be ahead to focus on virtue. Rousseau said governments are for helping the populace and ensuring that laws passed do the least amount of harm to the greatest number of people. Buddha said people should seek to harm no one, just as they themselves would not wish to be harmed.

And finally, Jesus said we should all do to others what we would hope they would do to us, and that we should love them as much as we love ourselves.

I can find no better way to put it than this last reference, and the World Cup showed a glimmer that, even today, such a thing is possible.
