Providence Sister Mary Jeanine Schubert served for 16 years in Catholic schools in Indiana and Illinois
Providence Sister Mary Jeanine Schubert, a member of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, died on May 14 at Providence Health Care at her community’s motherhouse. She was 84.
The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on May 23 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception at the motherhouse in St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Burial followed at the sisters’ cemetery.
Sister Mary Jeanine was born on Jan. 16, 1942, in Chicago. She entered the Sisters of Providence on Sept. 18, 1961, and professed final vows on May 23, 1970.
Sister Mary Jeanine earned a bachelor’s degree in education at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, and a master’s degree in early childhood education at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Ill.
During her 64 years as a member of the Sisters of Providence, Sister Mary Jeanine served as an educator in Catholic schools for 16 years in Illinois and Indiana. From 1983-2007, she worked for the American Medical Association in different positions. Beginning in 2007, she did sewing and quilting for charities and created gift items for her community’s Linden Leaf Gifts shop. In 2023, Sister Mary Jeanine dedicated herself entirely to prayer and presence in the community.
In the archdiocese, Sister Mary Jeanine served at the former St. Andrew the Apostle School in Indianapolis from 1966-67.
Surviving is a brother, Andrew Schubert, Jr., of Niles, Mich.
